Degrees of Sadness

Sadness is like humidity
It’s like the wet hot Florida heat that fogs your sunglasses and gets trapped in your throat
The warmth makes it hard to breath
The temperature is palpable
And sometimes your heart just hurts

Depression can be sticky
Like sap on your hands
Disrupting every touch
So that your fingers cloyingly press together
The feeling doesn’t wash off easy
It’s there
And makes you miss the softness
Of clean hands
And a peaceful heart

Grief it comes in waves
It washes over in unexpected moments
And hits you like the burning sun
That makes even moments sitting at the beach
Far too hot to bear
The ocean cannot combat certain levels of heat
And the heart is unprepared for certain levels of grief
